For years biologists have suspected that prairie-chickens could in fact travel a long distance in hopes of finding a suitable habitat.
A prairie-chicken hen was trapped in western Nebraska and released in Iowa, but she wasn’t about to stay put. Equipped with a GPS tracking collar, the biologists were able to track her real time and found out that she traveled 1,180 miles back and forth between Iowa and Missouri before settling in northwest Missouri.
Prairie-chickens are very fond of their habitats and don’t adapt to a new environment well. And that is one of the reasons for their rapid decline these days.
So this is quite a mystery. How could she make such a long journey and survive?
